Seller's Description
1978 Ford F-350 transporter with remote hydraulic tilt enclosed body. Comes with strong aluminium ramps and electric remote winch for use as a car carrier but useful for a wide range of tasks. 351 Cleveland (LPG), C6 automatic transmission, power steering - currently registered under historic scheme (under 4500GVM car license OK), but with engineering plate to support loads of up to 1500kg with full rego.
This truck is one of a kind. Long, heavy duty ramps, which with the tilt allow easy loading of low cars with splitters, etc.. Electric remote control winch, allowing for easy one-person loading and unloading (even if the car is disabled). Box dimensions 4.8m long, door is 2.05m wide by 1.9m tall (box is marginally bigger inside).
Truck had a full cab-off restoration around 20 years ago. No rust, with the exception of a small bubble in the inside of the pinch weld on one of the doors (already stripped, zinc coated and touched up to stop further corrosion). Almost all of the mechanicals have been rebuilt or refreshed over the past 2 years - full list below. Recently completed a trouble free trip from Sydney to Adelaide, and currently used to cart my race car to and from the race track. I’d happily get in this old girl and drive it anywhere in the country.
Paint is reasonable, though the rear box has suffered some scratches from trees along my driveway. Rear door on the box has also started to fade. A vinyl wrap would be a good idea. As for the running gear, engine is a 351 running dual Gas Research throttle bodies with twin mixers (just rebuilt). Bottom end was rebuilt 25000kms ago, with good compression and bores. Recent conversion to straight LPG and top end rebuild / general refresh (2500 km ago), which included:
* Refreshed 302 closed chamber heads w/ hardened seats (4V valves);
* New pushrods, lifters, valve springs;
* New Crow LPG torquer camshaft;
* New oil pump and timing chain setup;
* New water pump and starter motor;
* New electronic distributor (timing curve set up for straight LPG);
* New high output alternator;
* Re-tested gas tanks (3 tanks, 220L total gas carried, individually switchable);
* All new gas lines and shutoff valves, with tank senders set to the factory gauge (switchable for each tank);
* Rebuilt power steering pump;
* Full brake refresh, everything that needed to be replaced was replaced, and the brakes bled with fresh fluid;
* Rebuilt two piece tail shaft (Hardy Spicer), fully balanced, with new uni joints and new SKF centre bearing;
* Brand new tyres, front and rear;
* New high output ignition coil and Eagle leads;
* Much more
Transmission was rebuilt 25000kms ago and shifts sweetly with no noise or clunking. The interior is in very good condition - it has been converted to bucket seats (Subaru Outback seats) with a third fold-down dickie seat in the middle. Dash has been flocked and includes VDO gauges and a Mustang 3 spoke steering wheel. Very comfortable on long freeway drives. I also have a full under-dash A/C unit that I was planning to install and will come with the truck (brand new compressor is already fitted). The truck will cruise at 110kmh all day, is easy to load and unload, and is generally the coolest thing in the paddock.
Unfortunately, a recent move means that I don’t have a suitable place to store it anymore - so with much regret, it must go. The only negatives are the cosmetic issues as noted above (easy enough to repair), plus a few small patches of surface rust appearing on some chrome trip pieces. The hub caps are also starting to show surface rust, but brand new hub caps will be included with the sale.
